Best Wishes, Chuck!

Chuck, you are one of the most sincere, caring people in Poway. We regret you did not win your bid for Poway City Councilmember. It is this city’s loss. However, the City of Poway will continue to benefit from your wisdom and volunteer-spirit for decades to come, we are sure!

Chuck’s Response to News Chieftain “My Town” Article by Bob Emery

Bob Emery’s Poway 06 May 2010 column in the Poway Chieftain remarked on the eight candidates running for Poway city council. My thoughts on Bob’s column follow:

“…the recall against Betty Rexford”

The recall extends media coverage of an embarrassing event in Poway history. While I did not support the recall/election, I do want the voters to have me as their choice should the recall occur. My campaign for the last election found over 6,000 Poway voters wanted me to represent them on the Council. And that was 3rd for the election of two council seats. My hopes that this was important to the appointment of a council member after the events following the loss of Mayor Cafagna were dashed when past council member Carl Kruse offered to take the position with a promise he would not run for the seat in the November election.

“…the field of eight candidates…”

I welcome a large field. That puts more ideas on the table. And I don’t care if others have run before. I respect their dedication to Poway.

“I have already lamented on the lack of women candidates”

I haven’t given any thought to the gender of the candidates. I’ve never been much on quotas. Military service taught me to respect each person and their abilities based on their integrity and merits.

”…youth sports, Community service, volunteering, etc.”

Bob seems to disregard community service as a qualifier for City Council member. In fact, volunteers are very important, contributing heavily to the success of our city. Volunteer leadership is closely involved with the City Council and staff working on programs for the city’s well being. Many volunteer leaders attend the Poway Community Leadership Institute. This valuable experience makes me and other volunteer leaders uniquely qualified for a position on the city council.

I am surprised that Bob chose to diminish the Poway volunteer status of some candidates to keep them less attractive to voters than his chosen candidate. In fact, Bob is a Poway volunteer. And I appreciate his work!

“Chuck is trying his “Old Friend” campaign for the second time.”

AN OLD FRIEND & A NEW VOICE is a good campaign slogan that simply expresses my longtime service to Poway and my desire to have a stabilizing influence on the City in the Country.

The Poway Chieftain

Addressing my performance in the last election, the Poway Chieftain has often diminished the worth of my supporters by using the term “..distant third”. Consider that I am an independent, without support from the Democrats, Republicans, or other political party. And I do not have the financial contributions that accompany the camaraderie others enjoy from their political association. I am a hands-on small business owner who works and lives in Poway. I owe no allegiance to political action committees or party needs.

Most of my campaign funds came from supporters in Poway and from my own pocket. And the campaign could not afford competitive advertising in the Poway Chieftain or other newspapers.

I planned to run in the November election, not in this recall. But if the voters decide to recall Betty, I want to be their choice for City Council.

Press Release, March 16, 2010

Press Release                                                                  16 Mar 2010

Friday, Feb. 26, 2010 Chuck Cross met with the Poway City Clerk beginning the process to run in the June 8th election.  He planned to announce his candidacy at the March 2nd city council meeting, but postponed the announcement in deference to the King family and the somber events of that time.

Chuck will announce his candidacy at this evening’s city council meeting.

During Poway’s 2008 election for city council, Powegians selected three candidates above the rest.  Chuck Cross was one of those three candidates.  He was popular then, and continues to be an old friend to Poway.

Chuck wants to be the people’s voice in Poway.

He is politically independent without support or influence from any political party.  During the campaign, Chuck walked neighborhoods to talk about Poway.   Chuck waged his campaign with a shoestring budget getting his support from within Poway.

Chuck lives and works in Poway.  And his work takes him to every residential and commercial neighborhood.  He feels the pulse of Poway better than most council members and candidates.

Too often elected officials become a product of their surroundings neglecting the needs of their constituency.  Chuck will work hard to avoid this pitfall.

Chuck is an old friend to Poway

Chuck is a 26 year resident who lives in Poway’s Garden Road neighborhood.

Chuck and his wife, Mary have been involved in Poway as volunteers for many years.

Chuck serves as Chairman of the Board for the Poway-Midland Railroad Volunteers. They work with the Old Poway Park Action Committee to preserve and present Poway’s history to Poway’s youth. Chuck and his family have been involved with the Volunteers for seventeen years.

Chuck served eight years on Poway’s Parks and Recreation Committee.  As a member of the Sports Subcommittee, he helped the City Council understand the needs of youth sports in our community.  And he was a board member of the Poway Youth Soccer League, representing them in the Poway Sports Association.

Chuck is Second Vice Commander of American Legion Post 479 in Poway. He has been an active member of the post for a short time, and was honored to be elected to this post by our outstanding local veterans.  Chuck is a United States Coast Guard veteran.

Chuck will be the people’s voice in Poway.

While campaigning in the last election, Chuck discovered many residents want a new voice on the Poway City Council. There is no experience like going into the community and hearing the thoughts, desires and feelings of your fellow citizens. Poway is a vibrant city with a highly educated and perceptive population. Chuck can represent the city well, both in the Council chambers and in action with other governing agencies throughout the county and the State.

Chuck attended most council meetings over the past few years, and many more in years preceding.

Mary served on the Citizen’s Budget Review Committee nine times during years past; helping Chuck develop comfort and confidence with the budget process. Our City remains in good financial shape in this rough economy, and Chuck will work diligently to maintain that level of integrity.

Over the years Chuck worked hard to make Poway a great place to live and to raise a family. Chuck and Mary operate their businesses in Poway and raised their children in Poway.   Poway has a special place in their hearts, and they intend to be here a long time.

The Chuck Cross for  Poway City Council Campaign

Running for City Council

Chuck met with the city clerk on Monday 01 Mar 2010, with plans to announce his candidacy at the 02 Mar 2010 city council meeting.  When he learned of the Chelsea King candlelight vigil plannned for the same time, he postponed his official announcement in deference to the King family until the 16 Mar 2010 meeting.

Chuck, Mary and the whole community mourn the loss of Chelsea.

Welcome to Chuckcross.com, and thanks for your support and help to elect Chuck Cross to Poway City Council!

Platform

I am running for an open seat on the Poway City Council because I believe I can represent the interests of the citizens of Poway in an effective way. I envision and will work diligently towards keeping Poway the “City in the Country”. We have many parks and meandering hiking and horse trails that attract visitors and make this city a desirable place to live. By preserving the open space we have, we can keep our reputation as a great place to buy a home and raise our children.
